You are invited to discuss Auckland Waterfront issues – where is our comprehensive plan?

There’s a lot being planned behind the scenes for Auckland’s waterfront, and we are lacking a bold and comprehensive waterfront plan.

You are invited to a meeting to begin discussing these concerns as a group.

You may have seen proposals for Queens Wharf seep through the media, including a 3 story commercial building by a developer in exchange for upgrades to ferry infrastructure, a hotel on the America’s Cup base site at Wynyard Quarter, and thoughts of Shed 11 coming back. Close by Queen Elizabeth square is being negotiated behind closed doors, taking a slice for private development, and traffic engineers continue to rule over the vision to transform Quay street into a pedestrian boulevard.

Where is the comprehensive plan for the waterfront that Auckland was promised, and what can we advocates do about it.

We have asked Joel Cayford to present a slideshow at our next AAA meeting showing the initial concepts and visions for the Waterfront development in recent years and comparing these with the actual developments that have resulted, illustrating examples including Wynyard Quarter, North Wharf, Princes Wharf and Queens Wharf.

He will also talk briefly about what happened in Wellington: the role of the Wellington Civic Trust, Waterfront Watchdog, other stakeholders, and the importance of public engagement.
